The Origins of Detox Foot Pads History Detox Foot Pads are used in Reflexology practices where in Oriental medicine it is believed that our feet are closely linked to our overall health. In Oriental medicine the feet are believed to be 'the second heart' because they are thought to help pump and return circulation of blood and lymph back into our upper bodies. Modern lifestyles mean many people remain inactive throughout long periods of each day (when perhaps sitting at a computer or in an office) and this of course can inhibit this natural pumping action, leaving circulation limited to the lower legs, ankles and feet. Reflexology is based on using the feet to encourage a beneficial effect on other parts of the body and to improve general health. The feet can be seen as a pattern for the whole body and by manipulating them through massage it is believed stress can be relieved and other conditions can be treated. Reflexology was first found in ancient cultures such as Egypt and China, although modern reflexology was introduced to the United States in 1913 by William H. Fitzgerald (1872-1942) who as an ear, nose and throat specialist. He found that by applying pressure to the feet he could achieve an anaesthetising effect on other areas of the patients body. This was studied and developed to a greater degree by Eunice D. Ingham (1899-1974) a nurse and physiotherapist who found that the feet and hands were especially sensitive, and mapped the entire body into 'reflexes' on the feet (pictured below).
Foot Reflexology Chart Using this chart reflexologists believe that what happens to areas of the feet also occurs in the reflex areas of the body. An example of this might be that the arch of the foot is linked to the stomach and upper abdominal organs, the toes to the neck and head, and the ball of the foot is linked to the shoulders and upper chest. In order to treat a drainage from the area of your left shoulder you would wear the detox pad on the corresponding zone which is the upper and outer third of the left foot. |
